Our First two canals on the Erie

We left Lake Oneida behind and entered the Canal that runs parallel to Wood Creek.  As you read the literature of the region and the towns it is amazing how much history took place even before the canal was proposed.  Tom and I were looking forward to our first locks which would take us UP. There are three Locks 23,22,21 and 20 that take us up then we start down again. We called it a day at Rome after three locks and a total of 35 NM. We stayed at Bellamy Harbor Park, walk over to Coalshack Charlies for a great prime rib dinner. Our tie up had no hook ups, or amenities but we survived.
There are red and green numbered markers that mark the channel.
The numbers correspond to places on a map so you can
tell how far it is until the next lock. Some of them are interesting to identify.

Tom and Lock 23 going up

lock 22 was closed with a vessel going west bound so we had to
wait for locks to open
honest, can't make this up - a purple shopping bag - weird bird house-
anyone knows what this is hanging in the middle of nowhere on the backs
of the Erie Canal between 22 and 23 - let me know

walls are really slimy and musty smelling especially in the hot sun
