Locks 7- 6,5,4 one right after the other

This how we tied off at Quay 7 - Tom had to jump off the boat and run the line around this bollard - it may work for big ships but boy its a pain for us little guys.  There are no dock hands and no one to help you. The wind was gusting and pushing against the dock the only thing that seemed to help.  Now we wait for the SHIP.
if your so inclined you could toss a line on one of those screw post
and hope it holds - not really and option

OK it looks like a house on a pole
meet the St Mary Cement II- she is a factory ship that process rocks
for cement.  Registered owner: ST MARYS CEMENT CORP//Ship manager: FETTES SHIPPING
IMO 8879914//Gross tonnage: 11446
(Ex. VELASCO, CANMAR SHUTTLE)Port of Registry: EDMONTON
build in 1978 by GALVESTON SHIPBUILDING CO. of GALVESTON, TEX, US

who is hitting the wall now - you can see the men on the ship watching helpless ( I know that feeling) . The lock master
told them two pleasure craft were tied at the quay. It was pretty intimidating to see this coming down the canal.

Now the fun starts each lock is about a 45' drop. You motor up the
the correct side (lock 7 starboard) and lock personnel hand you
a coil of rope that you have to hold on to and let out carefully as you go
down. Holding to tight makes you hug the wall - slimy wall- to loose and you
drift out into the middle and the hot sun. The one good thing about going down
is your finally in the shade.
We motored about 1 mile to Lock 6 - port tie and the wind is
fighting us and there are only two people who are handing
ropes to MV Bear - our dingy took a beating- then down we go.
Tom took the stern and I was in the bow- still struggling with how
to control the rope.
were out and on to lock 5.  Lock 6,5,4 are Flight locks the lower a ship  139.5' in 4100'.
Each lock the water gets a little more turbulent but I am getting the hang of the whole thing.
Still hard work and you have to pay attention - no breaks.
leaving lock 4 - now a motor to lock 3 - 1.3 miles
