More Birds, Great Live Oak, McClellanville

Our walk around McClellanville was a surprise  Oak street is aptly named as it is lined with Live Oak and several other species of trees, draped in moss, giving this small town a very special look. If you every drive through the area, stop and stroll around these trees, have lunch, you will not regret it. 

McClellanville is a small fishing town in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 459 at the 2000 census. It is situated on the Atlantic coast, on land surrounded by Francis Marion National Forest and has traditionally derived its livelihood from the sea and coastal marshes by fishing, shrimping and oystering. As defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, and used by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes only, McClellanville is included within the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville metropolitan area and the Charleston-North Charleston Urbanized Area

The Deerhead Oak is both larger in circumference, 30.6 feet, and height, 67 feet, than the famed Angel Oak on Johns Island, SC estimated by some to be more than 1500 years old and thought to be the oldest living thing east of the Mississippi River. Of course, it is hard to estimate the age of these ancient trees, which predate the discovery of America by the Europeans, because boring samples are not reliable due to a tendency for the live oaks heart wood to rot.
