CAUTION watch for strong currents at every bridge
No @%@$% Sherlock. Current and timing are everything. The Wappo Creak James Island Highway Bridge is a double Bascule bridge where the current is strong. We chuckled to our selves as the bridge tender admonished us to hurry up and every where there are signs that say "no wake" and "idle speed". There is also a sign about bridge damage and who to call to report it.
Next Adventure with current is Elliott cut- a narrow rock cut with extremely strong currents. Tom had us at full throttle over 7 kts and only making 2kts over ground. However I saw a mink carrying a fish so I stayed distracted while Tom was at the helm.
From the cut your spit out in the the wide Stono River and over to our next berth at St John's Yacht Basin. The wind was gusting from the north, Skye was ahead of us and they were going to a T head dock in front of a house boat. Orginally they told us to back into a slip. I DON'T THINK SO. The current was monstrous - they finally put us on a T head and we came in with 4 people on the dock two employees, the owner of the house boat in front of us, and another boat owner. We were PINNED to the dock. Good thing we had fenders down ahead of time because there was no moving Cool Hand even with three people trying. The water was rushing buy us faster that we were going. WHEW we are here - and here is where we are staying until after Thanksgiving.
We are renting a car and going to tour Charleston, see the sights, get some Star bucks coffee, walk on a beach..... just stuff..... decompress..... stay warm
Forecast for Friday after Thanksgiving is 61 degrees and sun -
ALL I WANT FROM CHRISTMAS IS WARM SUN. :)
this was the lead boat, I know some sailors and Michigan who would have loved to be out there. |
