USS TEXAS in La Porte, TX

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM
Jennie and Josh are still with us, so we decided a road trip was in order. One place Tom had heard about was the USS Texas the last of the Dreadnought battleships. With a quick GPS search we were on our way. The state park is part of the San Jacinto Battle ground were Texas won her independence. It is another HOT day here so we opted to just tour the battleship.
When the Texas was commissioned she was considered to be the most powerful warship afloat because of her 10 14"/45 guns in fie twin turrets. She participated in both WWI and WWII.She was the first to mount anti-aircraft guns and the first to control gunfire with directors and range keepers, analog forerunners of today's computers.  In 1919 Texas became the first U.S. battleship to launch an aircraft and served as a plane guard and navigational reference for the first trans-Atlantic flight by the seaplane, NC-4.
Texas received the first commercial radar in the US Navy, and was designated flagship of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Her service record, her story is worth looking up. If you are in the Houston area this is well worth the visit even on a hot day.
